Cameroon signs Facility Agreement

Cameroon and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) concluded a Facility Agreement on 16 November 2006. The Agreement was signed by H.E. Ms. Madeleine Echuinté, Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation of Cameroon, on behalf of Cameroon, and by Mr. Tibor Tóth, Executive Secretary, on behalf of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission. The Facility Agreement will regulate the conduct of activities in respect of radionuclide station RN 13 in Douala. The agreement grants the Commission the necessary legal authority to carry out work at this International Monitoring System (IMS) facility on Cameroon's territory. It will come into effect when Cameroon notifies the CTBTO Preparatory Commission that it has fulfilled all national requirements for the agreement to enter into force. Cameroon signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty on 16 November 2001 and ratified it on 6 February 2006. The IMS, consisting of 337 facilities, is part of the global verification regime to verify compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. The CTBTO Preparatory Commission has now signed 35 Facility Agreements with States hosting IMS facilities. Of those 35 agreements, 28 have entered into force and one is being provisionally applied.
