Workshop on CTBTO International Cooperation and National Implementation
The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO PrepCom) organized a workshop on CTBTO International Cooperation and National Implementation for States from East and Southern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, from 18 to 20 June 2002.
Forty-four participants from twenty States, including four non-signatory States (Botswana, Eritrea, Mauritius and Tanzania), and a representative of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa attended the workshop.
The workshop focused on an overview of the work of the Commission in building-up the verification system as well as CTBT verification technologies and the potential benefits of their application for scientific and civil purposes.
Convened as a follow-up to the initiatives presented during the African International Cooperation Workshop, convened in Cairo, Egypt from 1 to 3 June 1999, the Nairobi workshop examined ways and means to promote regional cooperation. The workshop also facilitated exchanges aimed at supporting the timely build-up of the verification regime and the early entry into force of the Treaty.
