Xyoli Perez Campos, International Monitoring System

Dr. Xyoli Pérez Campos is a geophysical engineer from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM. She obtained a master's in Statistics and her master's and PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University. She did a postdoc at the California Institute of Technology, where she has also been a visiting scholar.

She worked as a researcher in the Department of Seismology of the Institute of Geophysics, UNAM. Her research interest has been broad and has focused mainly on seismic source, seismic structure, and site effects. She has studied the large earthquakes that have occurred in Mexico in the last twenty years and characterized the geometry of the Cocos plate under Mexico. She has advised dozens of undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Earth Sciences of the UNAM. She belongs to the National System of Researchers in Mexico.

She served as Head of the Mexican National Seismological Service (SSN) from 2014 to 2021. She led the response of the SSN during the devastating earthquakes that hit Mexico in 2017.

She has represented Mexico at various international organizations related to seismology. In particular, she was Mexico's representative in the Working Group B of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization from 2008 to 2010.

She has extensive participation in national and international professional associations. She was president of the Mexican Geophysical Union. She is a member of the board of the Seismological Society of America, the Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission and the International Seismological Centre.

In her academic and professional life, she has received multiple awards. The most outstanding are the recognition "Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz" by the UNAM for her work in teaching, research, and dissemination of culture, and the "Early Career Award" received in 2019 from the Stanford School of Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences as an alumna, for her achievements and contributions in earth sciences during her professional career. In 2021 she was recognized as #TuCientíficoFav (#YourFavoriteScientist) on the fan page of the General Directorate for the Dissemination of Science of the UNAM.
