PI/2006/19
The Republic of Montenegro has succeeded to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on 23 October 2006. This brings the total number of signatures to 177 and the total number of ratifications to 137.
On 28 June 2006, the Republic of Montenegro became the 192nd member of the United Nations after having declared its independence on 3 June 2006. With the Republic of Montenegro, the Eastern Europe geographical region now has 23 States, of which 22 have ratified the Treaty.
The CTBT bans any nuclear weapons test explosions or any other nuclear explosions. Drafted at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and adopted by the General Assembly on 10 September 1996, the Treaty was opened for signature on 24 September 1996 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
To enter into force, the CTBT must be signed and ratified by the 44 States listed in Annex 2 to the Treaty. These States formally participated in the work of the 1996 session of the Conference on Disarmament and possessed nuclear power or research reactors at that time. To date, 34 of the Annex 2 States have ratified the Treaty.
